FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about the IELTS Listening Academic test.
Are the IELTS Listening Academic tests on LexiPrep as difficult as the real exam?
Yes. The difficulty level is equivalent because LexiPrep uses IELTS Listening Academic materials from reliable and official sources, including:
- Actual Tests: selected from real past IELTS exams, reflecting the actual level of difficulty.
- Cambridge English IELTS Academic: the well-known official preparation series published by Cambridge, widely recommended by examiners and test-takers, which also includes real past exam papers.
Is the IELTS Listening Academic interface on LexiPrep very different from the real exam?
Not much. The LexiPrep interface closely simulates the real test with on-screen questions, a countdown timer, and direct answer entry. The main differences are only in colors and minor layout details.
How long is the IELTS Listening Academic test?
The total duration is 30 minutes.
- Paper-based test: candidates have an additional 10 minutes at the end to transfer answers to the answer sheet.
- Computer-delivered test: candidates type answers directly on the screen and only have 2 minutes at the end to review.
What is the difference between IELTS Listening Academic and General Training?
There is no difference. The IELTS Listening test is exactly the same for both Academic and General Training:
- Consists of 4 sections with a total of 40 questions, lasting 30 minutes.
- Same question types: multiple choice, form/note/table/flow-chart completion, sentence completion, labeling maps/diagrams, short answer…
Same scoring system and band conversion.
The differences between Academic and General Training only apply to Reading and Writing, not Listening.
Will I get scratch paper in the computer-delivered Listening test?
Yes. Candidates are provided with scratch paper to take notes while listening.
Note: all scratch paper must be handed back after the test.
If I make a spelling mistake, will I lose marks?
Yes. Even a single spelling mistake will be marked incorrect. Double-check your answers to avoid losing points unnecessarily.
Does the system differentiate between uppercase and lowercase letters (e.g., TRUE/true)?
No. You may write in uppercase or lowercase, as long as the spelling is correct. For example: “true”, “True”, or “TRUE” are all accepted.
Will I listen through headphones or loudspeakers in the exam?
Paper-based test: usually via loudspeakers in the exam room.
Computer-delivered test: each candidate is provided with personal headphones, ensuring clearer audio quality.
