FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to some common concerns about the IELTS Academic Writing test.
Are the IELTS Academic Writing tests on LexiPrep as difficult as the real exam?
Yes. The level of difficulty is equivalent because LexiPrep uses IELTS Academic Writing tests from reliable and official sources, including Cambridge English IELTS Academic and real past exam papers (Actual Tests).
What is the structure of the IELTS Academic Writing test?
The test lasts 60 minutes and includes 2 tasks:
- Task 1 (at least 150 words): describe, analyze, or compare data (charts, tables, processes, maps, etc.).
- Task 2 (at least 250 words): write an argumentative essay on an academic or social topic.
You may complete Task 1 or Task 2 first, as long as both are finished within 60 minutes. However, you should spend no more than 20 minutes on Task 1 to manage your time effectively.
Is the Academic Writing interface on LexiPrep very different from the real computer-based exam?
Not much. LexiPrep simulates the actual computer-based IELTS Writing test: the task is shown on the left, the writing area on the right, with a timer, notes tool, and navigation bar. The only differences are in colors and minor layout details.
What is the difference between IELTS Academic Writing and General Training Writing?
Task 1: Academic requires describing or analyzing charts, tables, or diagrams, while General Training requires writing a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal).
Task 2: Both involve essay writing, but General Training topics are usually related to everyday life and are easier to approach than Academic topics.
What are the scoring criteria for IELTS Academic Writing?
Your essay is assessed on 4 criteria, each worth 25%:
- Task Achievement/Response – meeting the requirements of the task
- Coherence & Cohesion – organization and logical flow
- Lexical Resource – range of vocabulary
- Grammatical Range & Accuracy – variety and accuracy of grammar
Will I lose marks if I write fewer words than required?
Yes. If Task 1 has fewer than 150 words or Task 2 fewer than 250 words, you will lose marks under Task Achievement/Response.
Can I use abbreviations or informal language in the test?
No. IELTS Academic Writing requires formal and academic language. You should avoid abbreviations, slang, symbols, and special characters if you don’t want to lose marks.
Can I make notes during the computer-based Writing test?
Yes. You will be given paper for brainstorming and outlining. You can also use the notes and highlight tools in the computer interface, similar to LexiPrep.
Note: all paper must be returned after the test.
Will I lose marks if I write my answers in ALL CAPITALS?
There is no official penalty for using all caps. However, it makes your essay harder to read and understand, so it is not recommended.
Does LexiPrep provide IELTS Writing scoring services?
No. LexiPrep does not provide scoring services, either by AI or human examiners. It currently only offers a library of IELTS Academic Writing tests with a real-exam simulation interface, allowing you to practice and save your essays.
